Concertina Tutor Alex Wade led a workshop in arranging tunes to give them life and interest at the June YCC meeting in Leeds on June 16th . We worked on The Wedding At Riding Mill, a tune written by Alex’ father-in-law David Oliver for her wedding to his son Joey…at Riding Mill, concentrating on technique in bringing out a melody, and also on creating interesting harmony arrangements.
The style of the tune is that of a wedding march familiar in Scandinavian folk culture, a slow and steady walk which accompanies the bride down the aisle. This was a fun piece to work with and an excellent session as always, led by Alex.
We also welcomed another special visitor to the June meeting –Niki Fliri, an English Concertina player from Vienna. He arrived in the UK in May to take part in the Swaledale Squeeze, and has spent May and June touring the country, visiting concertina groups and events as part of a sabbatical from his work as a music therapist. It was great to have  him along, joining in the workshop with Alex and also the regular YCC band session.
Plans for our next meeting in July include working on pieces for the 2025 World Concertina Day concert.
